Our baby has a heart problem...
PERMANENT NOTICE
Posted by: The Lee Family Homepage | more..

Day 3 Recovery. Martin is awake! One-week-old Martin wakes up to mommy's face after open-heart surgery.
On February 3, 2012 our 4th child was born with a congenital heart defect called Hypoplastic Left Heart Syndrome (HLHS). He will have 3 open-heart surgeries early in life. He already had his first (Norwood) surgery at MUSC in Charleston, SC. Let's give God the glory in all things. We learned this Psalm together as a family some time ago and it's very fitting: "I will bless the LORD at all times: his praise shall continually be in my mouth." Psalm 34.

This blog is a chronicling of our journey. We hope it will be a source of encouragement and blessing to all who share in our story.

Milestone -- Martin Reaches His One-Year Birthday!
FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 08, 2013
Posted by: The Lee Family Homepage | more..

What a difference one year makes!
Justin, Katie, Martin, and Calvin. We love our growing family.
Martin celebrates his first birthday with both families. The cake was provided by a non-profit organization called "Icing Smiles" -- they provide cakes for sick children.
Martin has reached his first birthday! It's really rather amazing to look back on 2012 and see just how far Martin has come. Quite like looking back down the steep trail of a mountain climb. This time last year we were all in Charleston, SC and...

Martin is super excited to be leaving the hospital soon!
Saying goodbye to the 4th floor of MUSC!
In the car ready to leave the hospital. Martin knows exactly what's going on. We haven't seen him this excited ever!
Hooray! We're being discharged today! We were told this morning by the doctor that Martin is looking very good and his last x-ray looked clear. We've been given the green light to start packing our bags! Needless to say, we are ecstatic! Dr....

MONDAY, AUGUST 20, 2012
Posted by: The Lee Family Homepage | more..

Guess who's starting to smile again? Faint, but we'll take it.
Finally got rid of the nasal cannula! Tubes and lines are disappearing. Comfort level is increasing!
Martin sitting up and getting stronger.
Martin continues to make a rapid recovery! Since our last post on Saturday, our children visited us over the weekend, Martin was moved from PCICU to "the floor" in the Children's Hospital, he had his RA lines removed (from his heart), he had his...

Things Moving Fast, Now in Step-Down Unit -- Visit from Kids!
SATURDAY, AUGUST 18, 2012

The children loved seeing their little brother again.
Our exit from the PCICU!
Slowly making a recovery. Starting to look like his old self.
Things are continuing to look bright for Martin! He's no longer in the PCICU but is now in the step-down unit (on the 8th floor) of the Children's Hospital at MUSC. More and more lines have been removed and the only remaining things in him are his...

Update: Breathing Tube Out -- Extubated in 12 Hours; Pulls Out His Own Feeding Tube!
FRIDAY, AUGUST 17, 2012
Posted by: The Lee Family Homepage | more..

Martin was extubated in record time!
Starting to smile?
Early this morning the doctors pulled out Martin's breathing tube! He was breathing very well on his own within 12 hours of his surgery -- which is very fast actually. Also, the cardiologist said that the echocardiogram they did on his heart...

Martin's Post Operation Update -- Patience Needed
THURSDAY, AUGUST 16, 2012
Posted by: The Lee Family Homepage | more..

The dreaded EKG. Even sedated, it seemed Martin didn't like it. :(
He suddenly opened his eyes -- just minutes after being rolled in! Too soon -- they quickly gave him more sedation.
Some of the surgery team! Dr. Kavarana on the left.
We finally got to see Martin and he does look a lot better than we expected. His color seems to be pretty good and he doesn't seem overly swollen (although he is a little obviously). I believe all those months of good-eating are probably serving...

Talking with the nurse. Martin not too happy.
Waiting for the anesthesiologist before the big surgery..
Martin admiring the "Martin Heart" necklace made especially for him by Jamie's friend, Lily, owner of Lily Pottery in Greenville, SC.
We were up early this morning and got to the hospital at 5:30am. Martin was pleasant for us last night and this morning and we were sad to have to "do this to him." It's a complicated emotion to express adequately when you want to protect a loved...
