“Cast Down and Lifted Up”
MONDAY, MARCH 17, 2014
Posted by: Eureka Primitive Baptist Church | more..

Luke 4:9-13: “And he brought him to Jerusalem, and set him on a pinnacle of the temple, and said unto him, If thou be the Son of God, cast thyself down from hence: For it is written, He shall give his angels charge over thee, to keep thee: And in their hands they shall bear thee up, lest at any time thou dash thy foot against a stone. And Jesus answering said unto him, It is said, Thou shalt not tempt the Lord thy God. And when the devil had ended al...l the temptation, he departed from him for a season.”

Luke 4:28-31: “And all they in the synagogue, when they heard these things, were filled with wrath, And rose up, and thrust him out of the city, and led him unto the brow of the hill whereon their city was built, that they might cast him down headlong. But he passing through the midst of them went his way, And came down to Capernaum, a city of Galilee, and taught them on the sabbath days.”

On two separate occasions in Luke Ch. 4 attempts to destroy Jesus by catastrophic falls from elevated locations are recorded. Satan, after taking Jesus to a pinnacle on the temple, challenged Jesus to cast himself down from the location high above ground. Satan quoted and gave a false interpretation to Psalm 91:11, 12 to tempt Jesus to jump with the assurance that angels would deliver Him from the fatal plunge. Jesus responded to Satan with the word of God and a correct application of Scripture and the Devil departed from Jesus for a season. Jesus was tempted like us but He always resisted the temptation and never sinned (Hebrews 4:15).

Jesus was empowered by the Holy Spirit and returned to his home town of Nazareth. He taught in the synagogue and expressed that he was the fulfillment of the messianic promise of Isaiah 61:1, 2. The response to Christ’s message and revelation was received with indignation. The congregation thrust Jesus from the city and carried him to a hill to cast him down to his death. Jesus supernaturally avoided their murderous scheme by simply walking away from the mob on the precipice.

Jesus was foreordained by God to be the sacrifice for our sins (Revelation 13:8). Jesus Christ would die but not until the time appointed by God. When Jesus died in the place of sinners, He was not cast down but rather lifted up: “And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so must the Son of man be lifted up: That whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have eternal life” (John 3:14, 15).
