What a wonderful time of the year! When the shepherds witnessed the angelic announcement of Jesus’ birth, they went to Bethlehem to see Jesus. When the Magi saw the star, they embarked on a lengthy journey to go and see the Christ child. This year, Christmas falls on Sunday and I am amazed at the trend for churches to be closed and for Christians to leave church out of their Christmas celebrations. This is a major change from when I began ministry here in 1993. I remember Christmas Sunday 1994. All the churches of the Capital Region were open for worshiping Jesus. I remember that we showed a special Christmas film for Sunday School and then had a sweet worship service and then went home to further celebrate God’s gift of His Son with our families and friends. Over these years that I have been in the ministry, I have heard many Pastors and Christians lament the crowding out of Jesus at Christmas and I have participated in expressing these concerns. Now, we have arrived at a time where Churches and Christians themselves have no time for the public worship of Jesus on Christmas Sunday. Sure, we can worship Jesus on other days but the Christians of the early church, which included many believers who saw Christ and knew Christ, gathered together on the first day of the week (Acts 20:7; 1 Corinthians 16:2). The recognized that worshiping together with other Christians was a mandate from God Himself as explained in Hebrews 10:25. We can worship God on our own but we can’t worship God together alone. We can worship God alone but we can’t experience the collective encouragement of the body of Christ without coming together to worship the Lord Jesus Christ. So, I urge you to keep Christ in your Christmas. Wherever you may be, make the time to worship the Christ of Christmas in a Bible-believing Church unless you are Providentially hindered.
