But into whatsoever city ye enter, and they receive you not, go your ways out into the streets of the same, and say, Even the very dust of your city, which cleaveth on us, we do wipe off against you: notwithstanding be ye sure of this, that the kingdom of God is come nigh unto you. Luke 10:10-11

Genesis 3:6 records that when Eve was tempted to eat of the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil, she found the Tree to be pleasant to the eyes and good for food. These two qualities were not unique to the Tree of Knowledge. According to our text passage, every tree in the Garden of Eden was pleasant to look at and also good for food.
Eve was surrounded by the gifts of God's grace, and any one of those gifts would have been satisfying. But Eve wasn't satisfied with what God had given her. She turned her gaze away from the multitude of blessings and looked at the supposed happiness which would come from rebelling against God. Adam was quick to follow her example. But unlike Eve who was deceived by the serpent, Adam willfully and purposefully rebelled against God by eating of the forbidden Tree. The end result was the fall of the human race.
I'm sure that neither Adam nor Eve ever intended to make the world such a difficult place when they fell from innocence. But their sin had consequences-- consequences that were far wider and had more impact than Adam or Eve could have ever imagined. And it all began when Eve looked away from the blessings of God and towards the false promise of happiness independent of God.
This is a perfect illustration of James 1:14-15: But every man is tempted, when he is drawn away of his own lust, and enticed. Then when lust hath conceived, it bringeth forth sin: and sin, when it is finished, bringeth forth death. The word 'lust' in those verses refers to any longing desire. Temptations are born when we are drawn away by our own carnal desires. What are we drawn away from? The goodness and blessings that God has given to us.
Had Eve stayed focused on the good, pleasant trees that God had provided for her, then she never would have rebelled against God. Had Adam done the same, he would not have fallen. This principle is still true for us today. When we look away from all the good that God has for us and focus upon the supposed happiness that will result from sin, a lust for that sin will be born. That lust will do everything possible to bring us into sin. Since sin is never beneficial, the end result will be heartache and sorrow.
Perhaps you've been tempted to go astray in one area or another of your life. Don't be fooled into thinking that a sin of wickedness will make you happy; don't look at the supposed happiness of the sinful world. Focus instead on what God has done for you and what God will do for you. Don't throw away His blessings for death and destruction. Stay content with the things of God, and you'll be glad you did.
