Semper Reformanda / Church and Family Reform
PERMANENT NOTICE
Posted by: Jade Ave. Baptist Church | more..

Pastor's Note

Semper Reformanda/Always Reforming

Earlier in the month I attended a family and church conference. The emphasis was on family and church reform. To reform must mean there was an original form to begin with, then at some point that form was distorted. This begs the question what does it mean to reform the family, it means we must turn to the scripture and return to the original form that God intended for the family. The original form can be seen in such verses as Gen 1:28, 9:1, 18:18-19, Deut 30:19-20 32:45-46, Prov 1:8, 7:1,23:26,31, Eph 6:4, Matt 18:10. These scriptures reference either the correct form or warnings against the incorrect ideas of a Godly family. Most of our ideas about family have come from what we have experienced in our own lives, what we have seen on TV and the prevailing society. Even the church in the last hundred years has taught that families should be discipled by staff and teachers other than their parents. Moms go in one room, Dads in another, children yet in a different room. Older are separated from younger, and the generations are disconnected. The scripture gives us a very different design for the family both at home and in the church assembly. Parents are to disciple their children, to teach them scripture, and to gain the heart of their children. Parents are called to create an environment of discipline and love. Older women are to teach younger women, younger men are to respect older men. Fathers are to be the spiritual leaders, and discipleship must take place at home. We are losing a generation of fathers who are willing to disciple, and mentor their children as a priority. We no longer have Sunday evening services to give families the time to worship at home. We have or will equip parents with teaching materials such as Truth and Grace Books, these along with bible stories and singing are involved in Family Worship. Grandparents must also recognize their scriptural duty to continue to teach. This is reform, our effort to return back to the scripture. To reform we must divorce ourselves of what we think to be true, and search for God's truth. This conference was full of likeminded Church leaders from across the country, who also recognize the need for reform. These are not new ideas but ones from generations past who were always reforming, seeking the scripture as their compass, rather than modern intellect and pragmatism. I challenge each of us to consider reform in our marriages, rearing our children and grand children, how we worship, seek God's word and His Face.

Attention all members, In connection with the new blogging and RSS capabilities of the site, we've now made it...

Sinner's Grace

Life was well and pleasing, so I thought,

Never seeking or thinking about God, as I ought.

To the world I loved, I was one of its' own,

I, nor they, recognized my hardened heart of stone.

To my enslaving sin, I was most blind,

Arrogantly, I considered myself, to be gracious, good and so very kind.

I felt secure in my faith, not knowing that it was in vain,

However, my Father saw my garment, covered with sin's crimson stain.

A stain that was extremely dark and ever so deep,

A stain for which my Savior died, so my soul He may keep.

To this Savior I had nothing to offer,

I at my best was but a blasphemer and scoffer.

Always doing all that I felt,

I had never been a vessel, in whom the Holy Spirit dwelt.

Me, of no value, nor of any worth,

No goodness or ability, to bring about my rebirth.

On my own, there still I would be,

To die without hope, and suffer hell for all eternity.

A man such as this, who should care,

Yet a Savior, took my sins, and gladly carrying them to the cross He did bare.

He sought me, though I had not sought Him,

He took what was worthless, and for His glory made me a priceless gem.

I do not boast, for I am the least of all,

A lover of sin, and a disobedient son of the great fall.

Though, to Him, it mattered not,

It was by His own council, a sinner such as I, by faith could received this lot.

Why me I ask, but only He knows;

That in a sinner such as me, His seed, He sews.

I am but a vessel, made from the miry clay,

It is not for me to question, the Potter will accomplish all He may.

He brought me forth from the gloomy darkness and overwhelming despair,

With a word form His servant, the gospel he did share.

Though I fought, He wooed me in,

He brought me unto salvation by His love, and delivered me from my sin.

My heart by nature, had been stony and hard,

Now He has made it soft and supple, so that it is Him that I regard.

The world I lived in, and for which I had so deeply cared,

I now see as lost, and the need for His truth to be proclaimed and to all be shared.

Though sometimes, I longing look to repeat the past,

God's grace restrains me, so as to my faith I may hold fast.

I know I can never repay any of my debt,

But, by His power I chose to follow whatever path He does surely set.

Grace, Grace, God's Grace

It takes a haughty sinner like me, and puts him prostrate on his face.

With a new heart that feels, and with new eyes that see,

Glory to God, I know it was always Him pursuing, for my pursuit would cease to be.

Called by the Father, redeemed by the Son,

Sealed by the Spirit, Halleluiah!, and to the praise of His Glory, His work has been done.

Peace and grace to all those who love our Lord Jesus Chrst,

John Jones

Cutting Edge Christiananity

Cutting Edge Christianity?

How can we make the Church Relevant?

How can we make the message of Jesus more palatable?

How do we reach the younger generation with the gospel?

These are the questions many within the Church are pondering. These types of questions and more are the topic of conversations among many church staffs and denominational leaders. This type of mentality makes some assumptions, one is that God is in the need of help from His creation, to carry out the redemption of sinners. Maybe it's not the assumption that God needs help, or maybe to show our worthiness depends on us to come with a plan to further His kingdom. Kind of like when a TV show ask you to send in ideas for an episode.

When you start with the basis that God needs our help, and that it is our responsibility to come with new and imaginative schemes, we begin to be PR specialist. This type of mentality causes us to look at depraved sinners in the need of a Holy Savior as consumers. Every business looks at its business plan and says how can we attract consumers and create a customer base. Clothing stores see what the newest trends are and make clothes that will attract consumers, McDonalds has a value menu because consumers want something cheap. When this mentality takes root, and sinners are now consumers we look at God as the merchandise. Then we want to market God and His services. People have a real need, cutting edge Christian leaders say how can we market our product to this consumer. Like all businesses they want to find out what the consumer wants and then offers their product "God" and "Church" by showing features and benefits.

i.e....

Attend Church On Line

A Whole New Way To Worship

We want to create a positive experience for you (the consumer)

These are all statements that I have seen as of late, that various Churches are making.

Problem, you can't attend Church on line. You can listen to sermons, you can listen to music and you can watch videos of preaching. Church is the "called out" and assembled together. You can't do that on line, if you are not called then you are not really the Church any way. This gives a low view of the assembling of the Saints, and the worship we engage in. Technology is not the problem, it the misrepresentation of the truth. Why can't they say go on line and listen to the message. Instead it is "hay you consumer we are cutting edge and you can get your religion in a hour on the computer."

"A Whole New Way To Worship"

Really, I thought when Jesus said "To worship in Spirit and in Truth" thought that was complete. I guess it's nice to know that in 2000 years now we have a new way to worship. That's some good advertising and marketing, making them feel that you have something new to offer, not the old Jesus and Hymns, but something new and exciting, Jesus on a Harley, or Jesus on a Horse for those good ol' cowboys who need to worship in a barn. Nothing wrong with the barn mind you, nothing wrong with cowboys, but still it's just a niche marketing plan, to appeal to consumers.

North Point Church/Andy Stanley

Pasted From Website & Ed Stetzer Interview

If you choose to join us one Sunday, we will make every effort to create an enjoyable experience for you.

Question: So, how do you engage people?

Andy: One of the things that we talk a lot about around here is what makes for a relevant environment?

There are three things:

1) an appealing setting,
2) engaging communication, and
3) helpful information.

John 6:60-64

60 Therefore many of His disciples, when they heard this said, " This is a difficult statement; who can listen to it?" 61 But Jesus, conscious that His disciples grumbled at this, said to them, "Does this cause you to stumble?

Pleasant experience and helpful doesn't seem to be the thrust of this particular teaching, but the truth, even at the expense of those who would walk away.

So I must be anti-evangelism, Hyper Calvinist, isolationist who is prepared like Jonah to watch the wrath of God destroy those who don't know their left hand from their right. Not at all, I want people to enjoy worship at the church I pastor, I want people to be exposed to the gospel and use technologies that are at our disposal. However, I don't want to treat people like consumers. I am bi-vocational and have been in sales for a long time. We can't use tactics that PR Firms and Marketing Strategist use, because it cheapens the gospel. Invite people to worship, but don't call it a "Whole New Way To Worship", because that's a lie and it's manipulation. Invite people to listen or view a sermon, but don't liken it to worship and assembling of the saints. Worship is for God, not for man, our main emphasis is how we can worship Him, not create a positive experience for visitors. When Moses took the children of Israel out of Egypt to worship, positive environment was not the greatest concern. I believe that God has a plan to redeem sinners, and my job is not to come up with a new one, it is to find out what He is already doing and follow Him.

Grace and peace to all those who love our Lord Jesus Christ,
