“David Danced Before the Lord” (2 Samuel 6:1-23)
MONDAY, JANUARY 19, 2015
Posted by: The Gospel Church | more..

“Then David danced before the Lord with all his might; and David was wearing a linen ephod (vs15).”

Don't get angry because God chastises us for sin. We read, “And when they came to Nachon’s threshing floor, Uzzah put out his hand to the ark of God and took hold of it, for the oxen stumbled. Then the anger of the Lord was aroused against Uzzah, and God struck him there for his error; and he died there by the ark of God. And David became angry because of the Lord’s outbreak against Uzzah” (vs6-9). It is OUR FAULT that we transgressed, and God is righteous to punish, even to death. Our happiness is not the test of righteousness (how we feel about it); obedience to God’s word is the test because we can be happy and sinful, doing wrong and thinking that we are right. David and all Israel rejoiced in moving the ark, but God killed Uzzah for doing it the wrong way. We read later, “And David called for Zadok and Abiathar the priests, and for the Levites… He said to them, “You are the heads of the fathers’ houses of the Levites; sanctify yourselves, you and your brethren, that you may bring up the ark of the Lord God of Israel to the place I have prepared for it. For because you did not do it the first time, the Lord our God broke out against us, because we did not consult Him about the proper order (1 Chron 15:11-13).” It was this way in false religion, when we pleased ourselves, but God’s way is the only way, so GET BACK ON TRACK, being thankful that He forgives murmuring complainers! Do it God’s way, and He'll be with you: the problem is with us, but it's correctable!

Secondly, there's great joy in following Christ, and living as He commands. We read, “Now it was told King David, saying, ‘The Lord has blessed the house of Obed-Edom and all that belongs to him, because of the ark of God.’ So David went and brought up the ark of God from the house of Obed-Edom to the City of David with gladness. And so it was, when those bearing the ark of the Lord had gone six paces, that he sacrificed oxen and fatted sheep. Then David danced before the Lord with all his might; and David was wearing a linen ephod. So David and all the house of Israel brought up the ark of the Lord with shouting and with the sound of the trumpet (vs12-15).” Do not be afraid: God’s ways please Him, and THERE IS joy and peace in obedience (Rom 15:13). He will bless faith and good works, and He'll honor everyone who honors His word, living strictly by His commands. Don't say, “I'll be happy in the flesh”, but walk in the Spirit, getting grace to love instead of hate and to do good to those who mistreat you (Gal 5:19-26). Joy in Christ is believing His work for you, and it is trusting Him to work in you, receiving His forgiveness and then forgiving others; it is repenting in hope, not condemned over sins, and not allowing them to rule us. Are you in a bad marriage, then be a great husband or wife. Is your life vain and empty, then live for God’s glory, not what you want, and peace will come that the world cannot understand. Yes, rejoice in God’s will, diligently following the scripture, and joy will guide you in eternal life. You and I can be happy (Col 3:12-17)!

Finally, the humble are honored by the humble. We read, “Then David returned to bless his household. And Michal the daughter of Saul came out to meet David, and said, ‘How glorious was the king of Israel today, uncovering himself today in the eyes of the maids of his servants, as one of the base fellows shamelessly uncovers himself!’ So David said to Michal, ‘It was before the Lord, who chose me instead of your father and all his house, to appoint me ruler over the people of the Lord, over Israel. Therefore I will play before the Lord. And I will be even more undignified than this [in your eyes], and will be humble in my own sight. But as for the maidservants of whom you have spoken, by them I will be held in honor (vs20-22).” The poor in spirit see the humble praise God, and they rejoice with us, seeing God’s goodness to the hell worthy in Christ, electing us to salvation rather than the curse. Philippians 3:3 says, “For we are the circumcision [true children of God], who worship God in the Spirit [by faith], rejoice in Christ Jesus, and have no confidence in the flesh”. Michal hated David's humility, but God’s people identify with electing love and mutually rejoice in Christ’s sacrifice! Do not be ashamed to dance before Him, glorying in Him instead of self. Some will hate your good works, but God’s people are pleased with the praise. The curse came upon Michal, but God’s blessing is on the nobodies who see all goodness in Him. Do everything His way, rejoicing that He cleanses you, and be unashamed of true joy!

Almighty Grace secures the believing one’s emancipation. Grace comes to the soul and finds it a captive. But Grace resolves that it shall be free. At first the sinner does not care for freedom—he hugs his chains like the Israelites did...
