“When I Provide You an Atonement” (Ezek 16:1-63)
FRIDAY, AUGUST 29, 2014
Posted by: The Gospel Church | more..

“Nevertheless I will remember My covenant with you in the days of your youth, and I will establish an everlasting covenant with you. Then you will remember your ways and be ashamed, when you receive your older and your younger sisters; for I will give them to you for daughters, but not because of My covenant with you [the old covenant of works]. And I will establish My covenant with you [new covenant of grace]. Then you shall know that I am the Lord, that you may remember and be ashamed, and never open your mouth anymore because of your shame, when I provide you an atonement for all you have done,” says the Lord God.’” (vs60-63)

God convinces us of sin, so that we turn to Him in repentance, receiving Christ’s atonement and the reconciliation. This is not by works of righteousness that we have done or because we are better than others; it’s because the LONG ARM of mercy reached the bottom of the barrel and saved us ENTIRELY by grace.

We will not think that we are better than anyone else, if we understand Ezekiel 16. He says, “Son of man, cause Jerusalem to know her abominations”, “And when I passed by you and saw you struggling in your own blood, I said to you in your blood, ‘Live!’ Yes, I said to you in your blood, ‘Live!’”, “Then I washed you in water; yes, I thoroughly washed off your blood, and I anointed you with oil [loved you]”, “But you trusted in your own beauty, played the harlot because of your fame, and poured out your harlotry on everyone passing by who would have it, “How degenerate is your heart!” says the Lord God, “seeing you do all these things, the deeds of a brazen harlot.” “You are the opposite of other women in your harlotry, because no one solicited you to be a harlot. In that you gave payment but no payment was given you, therefore you are the opposite.” “Because you did not remember the days of your youth, but agitated Me with all these things, surely I will also recompense your deeds on your own head,” says the Lord God. “And you shall not commit lewdness in addition to all your abominations.” “Samaria did not commit half of your sins; but you have multiplied your abominations more than they, and have justified your sisters by all the abominations which you have done.” For thus says the Lord God: “I will deal with you as you have done, who despised the oath by breaking the covenant [dealing unfaithfully with God though He has forgiven us].” God calls us brazen, stubborn, set in our ways harlots who are WORSE than others because we paid our lovers instead of them paying us. He says that we have an insatiable lust for sin, and these HARD WORDS are for His people because only sinners obtain mercy. Therefore, He brings us DOWN, so that He may exalt us, humbling us by the mercy that we receive.

This humbling is a joyful hatred of self and a content thankfulness toward God. He says, “that you may remember and be ashamed, and never open your mouth anymore because of your shame, when I provide you an atonement for all you have done,’ says the Lord God.’” We deserve hell for sinning against the light and proudly handling grace by serving ourselves rather than others, but after exposing our shame and causing us to feel miserable, the acknowledged sinner receives the FINISHED work of Christ and all that He did to atone our sins. Now, we praise and honor Him for His grace, living our lives for His glory, when before, we thought all was well with us so that we could indulge our sin and mistreat others. Gospel humiliation is receiving forgiveness and God’s grace to the guilty, and it is standing accepted by Jesus’ death, rather than us being better than others. He says, “Samaria did not commit half of your sins; but you have multiplied your abominations more than they, and have justified your sisters by all the abominations which you have done. You who judged your sisters, bear your own shame also, because the sins which you committed were more abominable than theirs; they are more righteous than you. Yes, be disgraced also, and bear your own shame, because you justified your sisters.” The lowly receive this abasement: we hate ourselves, love Him for saving us, and we love other people thereby!

If we are proud and full, then it shows itself by our disregard of others, holding grudges, and our indifference towards the church and lost souls who needs us. Pride says, “As long as I’m happy to hell with the world”, and, “Thanks God. I’ll see you later.”

Real faith, however, confesses yourself the Chief of Sinners, and it obtains mercy, which makes us patient, kind, and tender. Paul said, “And I thank Christ Jesus our Lord who has enabled me, because He counted me faithful, putting me into the ministry, although I was formerly a blasphemer, a persecutor, and an insolent man; but I obtained mercy because I did it ignorantly in unbelief. And the grace of our Lord was exceedingly abundant, with faith and love which are in Christ Jesus. This is a faithful saying and worthy of all acceptance, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners, of whom I am chief (1 Tim 1:12-15).” If we exalt ourselves, we’ll be abased, but God abases us so that He may exalt us again (Luke 18:9-14). What is your attitude? Being miserable about sin is NOT ENOUGH to humble you; you must believe Christ died for the great transgressions that you mourn over, and the pain that you feel must lead you to the infinite sufferings of the Eternal Son. Bless the Lord! He has an everlasting covenant that we CANNOT break; it is the new covenant, established by Christ’s blood, and it gives acceptance and power to the guilty. We have squandered the light, but Christ has done more to honor God than we’ve done to dishonor Him, and He swallowed the whole of His wrath on the bloody tree, remaining faithful while suffering.

Let no one tell you that Christianity is a feel good religion; it has self-abhorrence and no positive self-affirmations: God unashamedly abases us, rubs our noses like a dog, and then He gives us grace that we don’t deserve. If you are THE sinner, then you will see THE Savior, because He only saves the unworthy. Openly receive His hard words, and then you’ll receive the atonement and true humility thereby.
