Martin's 4-Month Update -- Thankful he's "breaking the mold"
TUESDAY, JUNE 12, 2012
Posted by: The Lee Family Homepage | more..

First time going to church for infant baptism service.
BEFORE
AFTER -- clearly lost some weight
At a recent cardiologist's visit, the doctor said that Martin was "breaking the mold" for HLHS babies. We are extremely encouraged by Martin's progress but we are not being presumptuous at all. We "rejoice with trembling." We know all too well...

Martin's 3-Month Update -- His 'phenomenal' growth is slowing down, but still doing great!
WEDNESDAY, MAY 09, 2012

These fantastic photos were taken by a family friend in her photo studio (Kachoo) here in Greenville, SC.
Our Martin is one special baby with lots of heart!
Dr. and Mrs. Alan Cairns finally get to meet Martin Alan Lee -- whose (middle) name he bears.
Martin is now over 3 months old and is continuing to do very well. His voracious eating pattern has slowed down ever-so-slightly and according to a recent doctor's visit his growth is also plateauing a bit. But no one is concerned at all because...

Martin has some really funny faces. What a character!
Here is Martin with his serious face. What a hoot!
Mommy taking Martin for a ride in the stroller around the block.
We've had some requests to keep the blog updated with Martin's progress so our family and friends know better how to pray for him. Sometimes it's easy for us to forget that while we see him every day, no one else knows how he's doing! We'll do our...

Martin, our miracle boy, with that sly smile of his -- at home at last!
The first night of Martin's homecoming! So great to be reunited with our wonderful children again. We love them all so much!
Martin finally safe and sound at home! Our journey is finally over -- for now.
We finally arrived back home in Greenville yesterday! After 9 weeks away from home and over 3 weeks living apart from our other children, we finally arrived back home yesterday at 1:30pm. Martin did well on the 3.5-hour trip from Charleston and...

We are to be discharged -- today! What a turn of events!

I'm much happier now! Martin without the feeding tube. We just learned that today we will be discharged if the last echocardiogram goes well!
Martin gets his final echocardiogram before we are discharged. No problems on the monitor!
Martin ready to get out of the hospital and enter the real world!
Martin did it! He has been able to successfully feed from a bottle for the past 24 hours and all through last night the required amount of at least 75mL each time! And since he's been feeding on Elecare, the bloody stools have stopped after...

Ugh! More blood -- stopped in our tracks again! :(

Martin had 24 hours of breastmilk which fattened him up (this is a good thing!). But blood was found again in his stool the next day.
We ran out to the store and got some things to apply to the ring of the bottle so he can smell something pleasant while trying to drink the Elecare formula again. We are willing to try anything. It is now or never.
Martin passed the swallow study with flying colors the second time around. He just sat there as still as could be even though he was overdue on his feeds. He did great!
We had a very great disappointment this morning. We found blood (again) in his stool. I can't even begin to tell you how so very crestfallen we both were. We had an absolutely GREAT day yesterday with Martin drinking from the bottle for the entire...

Update: They let us try breastmilk and he did spectacular!

He loves the breastmilk! He drank 65mL in 30 minutes by bottle!
Martin and Mommy share a moment after a great session with breastmilk. They let us try breastmilk by bottle one time. Turns out he loves it and drank better than ever!
Martin is all worn out after drinking a great meal! Apparently breastmilk has natural ingredients in it that makes babies sleepy after taking it.
The last 24 hours have been really tough with Martin being very fussy with his bottle-feedings. He would take a couple of gulps, then turn away and have this awful frown on his face -- generally, really fussy. We tried everything the therapist...

Big steps for Baby Martin -- bottles and the big move!
FRIDAY, MARCH 16, 2012

First time trying a bottle! So far so good. No 'mechanical' swallowing issues -- just have to get him to enjoy drinking something that tastes awful and smells nasty.
Look at this! We're finally getting wheeled out of here after 6 weeks of being in the same PCICU room!
In a new bed. In a new room. In the Children's Hospital now. Next stop ... HOME!
It is now Friday -- today Martin is 6 weeks old. Since the last post, there have been a number of big steps -- strides, really. He had his swallow study on Wednesday and (barely!) passed it. But passed it he did and so they gave the green light to...

Feeling much better -- more wires removed!
TUESDAY, MARCH 13, 2012

I am feeling much better, Mommy! Now if they can just get that thing out of my nose. Martin is now over 5 weeks old.
With the pacing wires out of his chest, Martin is able to sleep on his tummy for the first time. MUCH better!
The battle scars. The long line in the middle is where he had open-heart. The large sore on the left is where the chest tube went in. The other sores are where the pacing wires were inserted.
We have now been here for 8 weeks -- two full months! -- and Martin continues to do really well. Since removing the pacing wires from his chest, he has been much more comfortable! And it's been several days now since he had blood in his stool....

The kids getting a good look at little Martin
You can only imagine the expression Martin has on his face -- but he's probably giving them a great big smile!
What's with the funny face?
Well, the children came and went. That was fast. It was great to see them again! We are so looking forward to getting back home to our children. Martin has really been doing quite well. He has been on the new Elecare formula for 3 full days now...
