CALL TO WORSHIP (Tune: “O Little Town of Bethlehem,” – p. 92) (Words by Pastor Jim Byrd)
Sing praises to the Son of God, Who down from heaven came; To save His people from their guilt, From misery and shame. Down from His heav’nly glory The Savior came to earth; And angels looked with fear and awe, upon Messiah’s birth.
God in the flesh, the Son of Man, our Prophet, Priest and King; The Seed of woman came to earth, to save the perishing. In love and great compassion, the great Redeemer died; He reconciled us to our God and we are justified.
Christ gave Himself, the ransom price, our debt of sin to pay; The sword of justice pierced His heart, and guilt was washed away. O’er sin and death He triumphed, His greatness let us own; The Savior reigns forevermore, upon His sovereign throne.
Bow down and worship Christ the Lord – His wonders gladly tell; The fullness of the Godhead three, in Christ the Savior dwell. The only Mediator, on Him our hopes depend; He is our Savior, God and King, our Advocate and Friend.

“For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace. Of the increase of his government and peace there shall be no end, upon the throne of David, and upon his kingdom, to order it, and to establish it with judgment and with justice from henceforth even for ever. The zeal of the LORD of hosts will perform this.” (Isaiah 9:6-7)
This is one of the many Old Testament prophecies concerning the coming of Christ into the world to save His people from their sins by establishing righteousness for them to secure their whole salvation unto final glory. As God in the flesh He satisfied justice by dying for our sins and paying our debt in full. The language of these verses expresses both the greatness of His Person and fullness of His redemptive work. All who hear the Gospel, God’s promise to save sinners and give them the whole inheritance of eternal life and glory based on the righteousness of Christ, are commanded and fully warranted to rest in Christ. – Copied
Christ was not born and did not live and die to make salvation possible for sinners who would believe in Him. He was born, and He lived and died to insure that His people would believe in Him and persevere in the faith unto glory. His death is the assurance of spiritual life, and spiritual life is the assurance of faith in the Lord Jesus Christ.
THE CONSOLATION OF ISRAEL
“And, behold, there was a man in Jerusalem, whose name was Simeon; and the same man was just and devout, waiting for THE CONSOLATION OF ISRAEL: and the Holy Ghost was upon him.” (Luke 2:25)
Simeon was an old man who lived in Palestine at the time of Christ’s birth. God’s word describes him as “just and devout waiting for the consolation of Israel.” The Holy Spirit had revealed to Simeon that he would not die until he saw the Messiah in the flesh. By the revelation of God in the power of the Holy Spirit, Simeon knew and understood exactly who the Messiah would be and what He had come to accomplish. Simeon saw the baby with his physical eyes, but he saw the Lord’s Christ, the Lord our Righteousness, the consolation of Israel, with the eye of God-given faith. This baby would grow into manhood, obey the holy law of God perfectly, and by His death on the cross for sins of God’s elect, He would establish the only ground of peace between God and sinners. Simeon believed God’s promise to save him and bless him with all salvation based on the merits of Christ — “For mine eyes have seen THY salvation” (Luke 2:30). This the “salvation” worked out by God in Jesus Christ our Lord, and freely given us by God through Jesus Christ our Lord.
Simeon also knew that Christ would be the Redeemer, not of the Jews only, but also of God’s people among the Gentiles — “Which thou hast prepared before the face of all people; a light to lighten the Gentiles, and the glory of thy people Israel” (Luke 2:31-32). He knew that God justifies the ungodly based solely upon the righteousness of the Lord Jesus Christ freely imputed and received by faith. He knew that national heritage, circumcision, and religious efforts must be totally excluded from the ground of salvation. He saw that Christ’s righteousness alone insures and entitles sinners to the whole inheritance of grace and glory. This is the consolation, the comfort and peace, of spiritual Israel, all who come to God seeking salvation based on the merits of the obedience and death of Christ. -- Pastor Bill Parker
