Lesser evil is not going to in anyway a scape of consequences from God. Actual events of Judgment may come when things are not as bad in relative sense. Israel had forsaken God and ignored His guidance and correction. So God finally stop actively protecting them. A desire to be like a world or loving the the world like what Israel did will be the cause of compromising and will lead to forsaking God. Unless we love the Lord supremely, we will not be able to love our children,spouse and fellowmen. When God brings judgment, He must first send warnings. If we vow to nothingness(idols), we will become nothing. When we begin to worship true God in a false way(own way),we will end up worshiping false God. God doesn't accept worship that is not in accordance with His word. Today, what is true takes second place of what we enjoy and like and feel good. Biblical Christian must worship base on what God declares.
