The Methodist preachers generally preached against this extravagant wildness. I did it uniformly in my little ministrations, and sometimes gave great offense; but I feared no consequences when I felt my awful responsibilities to God. From these wild exercises, another great evil arose from the heated and wild imaginations of some. They professed to fall into trances and see visions; they would fall at meetings and sometimes at home, and lay apparently powerless and motionless for days, sometimes for a week at a time, without food or drink; and when they came to, they professed to have seen heaven and hell.
“ Revival of Evil part 2 of 2 ” Part 2 of 2¶ This was the most troublesome delusion of all; it made such an appeal to the ignorance, superstition, and credulity of the people, even saint as well as sinner. I watched this matter with a vigilant eye. If I opposed it, I would have to meet the clamor of the multitude; and if any one opposed it, these very visionists would single him out, and denounce the dreadful judgments of God against him. They would even set the very day that God was to burn the world....They would prophesy, that if any one did oppose them, God would send fire down from heaven and consume him, like the blasphemous Shakers. They would proclaim that they could heal all manner of diseases, and raise the dead....They professed to have converse with spirits of the dead in heaven and hell, like the modern spirit rappers. “ Man as a leader, not slave driver Part 2 of 2 ” Unofficial brief ¶ The truth of the Bible is paid attention to by believer the nonbelieiver just scoffs. ¶ Proverbs 9:7 He who corrects a mocker invites insult. “ Divine Order for Male and Female is for Eternity ” Unofficial brief ¶ The family has always been important, and what has been happening in this country of late is a good reason to focus on it. The gender revolution has been an evil one. Blurring the distinctions between the sexes and saying it right, is man's rebellion against God. You're being unloving, unkind, and showing a bitter spirit when you blur the distinctions between the sexes. ¶ Galatians 5:1 Stand firm therefore in the liberty by which Christ has made us free, and don’t be entangled again with a yoke of bondage. 13 For you, brothers, were called for freedom. Man could've eaten of the Tree of Life, before the fruit of the Tree of Knowledge, he would have been confirmed in his unfallen state forever. Eating of the Tree of Knowledge, before he would be confirmed in sin forever if he ate of the tree of life afterward.
“ Mankind is like God -- Spiritually ” Unofficial brief (continued) ¶ This sermon can be almost split down the middle. The first part an introduction, and the second part looking specifically at men and women. God created everything, and He's sovereign over everyone. God's invitation to everyone is to turn to Him and be saved. ¶ Isaiah 45:23 I have sworn by myself, the word has gone out of my mouth in righteousness, and will not return, that to me every knee shall bow, every tongue shall take an oath. 24 They will say of me, ‘There is righteousness and strength only in Yahweh.'" Genesis and Revelation have to be interpreted literally, People aren't believers if they try to dismantle the Bible. ¶ Genesis 1:27 God created man in his own image. In God's image he created him; male and female he created them. ¶ Man=mankind, not humankind. God didn't write a gender-neutral Bible. Man was given priority. Men and women are to reproduce and subdue the earth.
“ Introduction to Introduction series on the Family ” Unofficial brief ¶ This is introduction in relating to the family matters. Lincoln had a proposal before the city council on expanding protection for people who had deviant sex practices. At least the evangelical pastors had a Biblical view on this ordinance, ¶ 1 Corinthians 6:9 Or don't you know that the unrighteous will not inherit the Kingdom of God? Don't be deceived. Neither the sexually immoral, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor male prostitutes, nor homosexuals, 10 nor thieves, nor covetous, nor drunkards, nor slanderers, nor extortioners, will inherit the Kingdom of God. ¶ Everyone being created by God is a child of God, physically, but Biblically, not all are the children of God. There is a God who has revealed himself in the Bible. ¶ Jeremiah 9:24 but let him who glories glory in this, that he has understanding, and knows me, that I am Yahweh who exercises loving kindness, justice, and righteousness, in the earth: for in these things I delight, says Yahweh. ¶ Much of the so-called science is an attack on God. The Word of God isn't in conflict with the --facts-- of science.
“ An excellent example of Expository Preaching ” This is not a comment on the contents of the sermon. I covered that in my first message. It is about how the sermon is presented. I thought it a particularly fine example of Expository preaching. See the Wikipedia article on Expository preaching, which at the time of this message, was done very well. ¶ It is a technique of Exegesis, as the Webster 1913 dictionary puts it, "Exposition; explanation; especially, a critical explanation of a text or portion of Scripture." It is drawing out the meaning of a verse or set of verses of Scripture rather than reading into them. ¶ The Bible verses that relate to this technique are as follows, ¶ 2 Timothy 3:16 Every Scripture is God-breathed and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for instruction in righteousness, 17 that the man of God may be complete, thoroughly equipped for every good work. Ephesians 6:17 And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God; Hebrews 4:12 For the word of God is living, and active, and sharper than any two-edged sword, and piercing even to the dividing of soul and spirit, of both joints and marrow, and is able to discern the thoughts and intentions of the heart. ¶ Besides the Wikipedia article, Jamieson, Fausset, and Brown Commentary is also useful.
“ No true Wisdom, without being a -true- Christian ” Unofficial brief ¶ James is firm in his letter. Every other verse in effect is a command. His readers' life will be changed to be in conformity with what God said. Being free from the Mosaic law doesn't mean you're free from living an obedient life. Going through the motions of being a Christian doesn't make you one. You have to really trust Christ for salvation. Stopping short in trusting Christ doesn't save you. ¶ Hebrews 2:3 how will we escape if we neglect so great a salvation—which at the first having been spoken through the Lord, was confirmed to us by those who heard; 4 God also testifying with them, both by signs and wonders, by various works of power, and by gifts of the Holy Spirit, according to his own will? James 1:4 Let endurance have its perfect work, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking in nothing. 5 But if any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all liberally and without reproach; and it will be given to him. 6 But let him ask in faith, without any doubting,... ¶ Saving faith is enduring faith; it's an ongoing life of faith. God's trials are to bring a maturity to our faith. Our major problem is not to take the simple truths of God into our heart. Without the true wisdom of God that comes through our genuine salvation, we're anchorless.
“ Be Resolute! Have the patience of Job ” Unofficial Brief ¶ James is not addressed to any particular church or individual that is why it is called a "catholic" epistle. James called himself a slave of God and Christ who wrote to Christian Jews outside the land of Israel. These people were under a double animosity from both Jews and Gentiles. James will talk about trials and tribulations Christians face and how to handle them. They should manifest their faith in all their activities. ¶ A faith that hasn't changed a life isn't a saving faith, 54 commands are given in 108 verses. James is abrupt in both his greeting and conclusion of his letter. Getting down to business starts right in the second verse! ¶ James 1:2 Count it all joy, my brothers, when you fall into various temptations, 3 knowing that the testing of your faith produces endurance. ¶ The multifaceted trials can cause sorrow and tears, but also joy, a satisfaction, when you realize they are for God's purpose. They are a testing of your faith, and realizing this is of utmost importance. ¶ James 5:11 Behold, we call them blessed who endured. You have heard of the patience of Job, and have seen the Lord in the outcome, and how the Lord is full of compassion and mercy. ¶ Your faith is refined by the fire of trials. You learn stability and be rid of immaturity.
“ A life of service is usually not a life of ease ” Unofficial brief ¶ When we go through trials and difficulties, they reveal our true character and spiritual condition. They answer the question, is God sovereign in our life? ¶ Philippians 1:29 Because it has been granted to you on behalf of Christ, not only to believe in him, but also to suffer on his behalf. 2:13 For it is God who works in you both to will and to work, for his good pleasure. ¶ Paul went through one trial and difficulty after another. The stormy sea that Paul faced as prisoner heading for Rome helped him mature as a Christian. God's grace protected Paul and the rest people on the ship. God's providence will work for saving their lives, though the ship is destroyed. ¶ Acts 27:23 For there stood by me this night an angel, belonging to the God whose I am and whom I serve, 24 saying, ‘Don't be afraid, Paul. You must stand before Caesar. Behold, God has granted you all those who sail with you.' 25 Therefore, sirs, cheer up! For I believe God, that it will be just as it has been spoken to me. ¶ God acts for His glory and our good. Even a viper's bite couldn't stop Paul from fulfilling God's plans. Webster's 1913 dictionary, "Providence: A manifestation of the care and superintendence which God exercises over his creatures; an event ordained by divine direction."
“ Acts is about action of the Holy Soirit and men ” Unofficial brief ¶ The Book of Acts is the history of the Holy Spirit continuing the Christ's ministry as it relates to the early church. His purpose was securing salvation and laying the foundation for the coming Kingdom. It's not a biography of the Apostles Peter and Paul. ¶ Acts is about the ministry of the Holy Spirit in spreading the message of Christ. The Providence of God is pointed out. It shows how the hand of God was guiding the growth of the new Church. ¶ The Providence of God often does not spare the believer of suffering as can be seen by Paul's life as told in Acts. God said Paul was going to Rome, but Paul was probably not expecting how hand of God was going to get him there. ¶ This was the first imprisonment in Rome of Paul. He was there in two years and wrote the prison letters, Ephesians, Philippians, Colossians, and Philemon. Paul's jail time in Rome was very productive for the Lord! ¶ Acts 28:30 Paul stayed two whole years in his own rented house, and received all who were coming to him, 31 preaching the Kingdom of God, and teaching the things concerning the Lord Jesus Christ with all boldness, without hindrance. ¶ We are to share the Gospel as Paul did, Luke pointed out that through the Holy Spirit followers of Christ are to witness about Him.
“ James, Slave of God, Writer to Elected Diaspora ” Unofficial brief ¶ The epistles, James thru Jude, are general epistles not written to specific churches or persons. It wasn't by an apostle which made some in the early church uncomfortable in its acceptance into Canon, and since it was about the outworking and demonstration of Justifications, later Christians such as Luther had problems with it as well. As we work through the Letter of James will be seen that James is an inspired book. ¶ After a brief greeting, While many topics are covered the general theme is the how salvation is worked out in a believer's life and without the manifestation in a person's life there is no salvation. ¶ There were four different men with the James in the New Testament, two were Apostles, e.g., James, the brother of John. This James was the half-brother of Christ. ¶ Galatians 1:18 Then after three years I went up to Jerusalem to visit Peter, and stayed with him fifteen days. 19 But of the other apostles I saw no one, except James, the Lord's brother. ¶ James like his other brother Jude, didn't believe in Jesus until after his Resurrection. James became prominent and well known in the early church, so well known he was stoned to death in the 60's AD by the scribes and pharisees. He became a bond-servant, a slave, to Jesus. He belonged to Christ!

Ah, one of the irritations in life. I saw the need to correct that URL. ¶ I also just ran across a John MacArthur article from a book done late in the last century, but which I just saw on the 06/23/2015. Both these articles give examples of forgiveness -- but not restoration! Both are good articles, John MacArthur's is the shorter of the two. John certainly doesn't pull any punches in his article!
“ Study the life of Abraham! ” Unofficial brief ¶ Paul: If you think works enter into salvation, you are going to hell. Works are not necessary to be saved. Works aren't part of what brings us into right relationship to God. ¶ James: If you claim to have faith and have no works to prove you have that faith, you are going to hell. Works are necessary for salvation. Works are a necessary result of being brought into a right relationship with God. ¶ James 1:21 Therefore, putting away all filthiness and overflowing of wickedness, receive with humility the implanted word, which is able to save your souls. 22 But be doers of the word, and not only hearers, deluding your own selves. James was clear on faith that it was a work of God. 2:17 Even so faith, if it has no works, is dead in itself. 18 Yes, a man will say, "You have faith, and I have works." Show me your faith without works, and I by my works will show you my faith. ¶ You can't see faith, but you can see the manifestation of it. "A good tree bares good fruit. A bad tree bares bad fruit!" There's faith and saving faith. Demons even have faith. If you have saving faith, you'll be a new creature in Christ. Demons never change. ¶ Abraham was tried by God when he was told to offer up Isaac--Abraham met the test of his faith by his actions.
“ Great Sermon to show patience and not your temper! ” Unofficial brief ¶ James is concerned about the behavior of the Jewish-Christian diaspora. A believer looks at trials through a difference lens than the unbeliever. We see trials to shape and mold us to His desire for us to achieve maturity in Christ. ¶ We are encouraged to come to God for wisdom no matter the situation. We were saved by faith; now we are to walk by faith. Sin is never part of God's plan for his people! Trials are brought into our lives so we would grow--not to sin. ¶ James 1:16 Don't be deceived, my beloved brothers. 17 Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights, with whom can be no variation, nor turning shadow. 18 Of his own will he brought us forth by the word of truth, that we should be a kind of first fruits of his creatures. ¶ The greatest gift He's given us--our salvation. ¶ James is concerned how the Jewish-Christians behave since they are disliked because they are both Christian and Jews. We are to demonstrate the character of God in our lives. Sometimes we don't want to be associated with a person because we may support his position, but not the way he handles it, e.g., rough-speaking pastors. We are to be quick to hear, but slow to speak and to get angry. We are to be patient.
“ Great Sermon on qualifications of elder/pastors! ” ¶1 Timothy 3 ¶1 This is a faithful saying: if a man seeks the office of an overseer, he desires a good work. 2 The overseer therefore must be without reproach, the husband of one wife, temperate, sensible, modest, hospitable, good at teaching; 3 not a drinker, not violent, not greedy for money, but gentle, not quarrelsome, not covetous; 4 one who rules his own house well, having children in subjection with all reverence; 5 (but if a man doesn’t know how to rule his own house, how will he take care of the assembly of God?) 6 not a new convert, lest being puffed up he fall into the same condemnation as the devil. 7 Moreover he must have good testimony from those who are outside, to avoid falling into reproach and the snare of the devil. ¶ Comment on the first comment ¶ I must have did the first comment on the sermon in the wrong part of the day for me! Note one of my constant failings is leaving off no's, nots, and n'ts ¶ "He can be a slack..." should be "He --can't-- be a slack..." ¶ This is an excellent sermon that covers material, which I don't believe was covered in later sermons by Dr. Rugh on Elders, so when studying the topic certainly put this sermon on your list! ¶ If I made some serious mistakes in this message--ignore them.

I thought I would tie them in with perhaps what would also be an "ancient" sermon of Dr. Rugh's on SermonAudio and I found this one as fresh as a mint in comparison, preached in 2004. Now, I would seriously doubt that Dr. Rugh has changed his opinion on the subject of elders/pastors in this time period and the following sermon covers a couple of topics in detail that isn't emphasized in detail in the official summary so, ¶ This is an unofficial Brief ¶ Starting 24 minutes into the sermon, a closer look how pride can ruin a young/experience Christian can be put into the position of elder/pastor. His pride of position can lead to serious damage to himself and his congregation. An elder must have a good reputation among the realm of unbelievers. He can be a slack worker, a womanizer, a foul mouth, or a profligate, He must have a good reputation with people outside the church. This sermon --I think-- covers topics that aren't covered in some other sermons?
