Great Sermon! I thought of C. H. Spurgeon from this sermon.....this is from J. K. Popham....
this is just bits of it....
J. K. Popham quotes D. L. Moody as saying to his congregations, "Christ has purchased them, if only they will give themselves to Him; He put away their sins nearly 2000 years ago, but they may yet die in them through unbelief."
C. H. Spurgeon proceeded in his, "lack of serious concern about incipient doctrinal defects," to preach on behalf of D. L. Moody and invite him to preach at the Metropolitan Tabernacle. When J. K. Popham and Dr. Kennedy wrote against Moody and Sankey in 1875, C. H. Spurgeon leapt to their defence and said, "We are happy to have our friends here in London because somehow or other they manage to get the popular ear. Our brethren have got a grip of the masses, and they preach the Gospel." What Gospel did they preach? And where did Spurgeon stand? In his pamphlet J. K. Popham wrote, "One of the sad features of this movement is that it is approved and followed by so many ministers. Does not their support of Moody and Sankey stamp their characters? Does it not prove that, with respect to them, 'Truth is fallen in the street?'"
Great Sermon! What a feast my wife and I get from the grand truths preached at your church. I know how thankful you all are to be in a church where the Glorious Gospel of FREE GRACE IS PREACHED. Well we glory in the Lord having put this Gospel in our path that we may listen, OVER AND OVER AGAIN!!
Subtile... "Christ was made sin for us, who knew no sin." This is the plain teaching of 2 Cor 5:21. There is no doubt that He never sinned in his nature, for He knew no sin. But He was made sin. Isn't that worse than being a sinner? Isn't that why God the Father forsook Him? God couldn't condemn Him if he remained just, read Proverbs 17:15 "He that justifieth the wicked, and he that condemneth the just, even they both are abomination to the LORD." What about Psalm 40:12? That the sins of all those whom the Father has given to Him were imputed to him there can be no doubt. The real question is what is it for the Lord Jesus to be charged (imputed) with my sin, if he is not actually made guilty of the charge? Or more importantly what is it for me to be charged with His righteousness if I am not actually made righteous? I mean right now. Righteous before God. Not guilty of any sin I ever committed or ever will commit? Every sin I have ever committed were yet future at the time they were imputed (charged) to Him. Every one of them. What? Will this make me "live like I want to" and sin more and more? God forbid! I wish I could live like I want to. Oh, wretched man that I am! But thanks be to God for His great love wherewith He loved us. Eph 2:1-10.
standing for the truth I thank the LORD for your stand on the truth, that the Elect's sins were imputed to Christ, Laid upon Him, they were not put in Him. The true church has always believed that the sins were laid upon Him.
Precious Doctrines of Grace I never tire of hearing of the precious Grace of my God. There are no churches in my area that preach the doctrines of Grace, so I am quite without a church to attend and am very thankful to pastors like Jim, who stand firm in the truths of the Bible.
Awesome TRUTH! This sermon was glorious. Thanks for mentioning it to me in the email. I got off work late tonight, but I could not go to bed until I listen to it, and am so glad I did. You brought out Proverbs chapter 8 beautifully and we just rejoiced in what we heard. What a GREAT SALVATION!!!!
Awesome TRUTH! Awesome Glorious Truth. That Christ was given or He layeth His life down for the sheep. That if he has been a sinner or had sinned in any way, He couldn't have given His life, but it would have been taken in justice to his own sins. BUT WHAT A GREAT SAVIOUR WE HAVE WHO KNEW NO SIN!!!!
Great Sermon! We love the Discriminsting Gospel that is preached time and time again. We have nothing to do in building God's House. Christ has done all the work, no hammer can be put to it. This was a message my wife and I will listen to time and time again.
Glorious TRUTH! My wife and I rejoice in the Gospel that is preached in your church. This is a message we gloried in. This is the Christ who the Spirit revealed to us. He stopped both my wife and I from free willism and Vain Calvinism and as Winston said in his sermon on Ps. 23 He has to make us lie down in green pastures, lie down from our works righteousness and come to the Christ who did everything to accomplish salvation for us. May the Lord continue to use you for his glory.
Accepted in the beloved before I was born? WOW!!! Amazing, so amazing, but it is there in the Bible in plain language! I can rejoice that my offerings of worship are accepted based on what Christ has already done for me. My head is in a whirl over this incredible concept. It's just too wonderful for words!
