Winnen Russ was born in Fort Worth, Tx, the son of a Baptist minister who was attending Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary at the time. His great, great grandfather is noted Southern Presbyterian theologian Thomas Ephraim Peck. Winnen's maternal grandfather was a missionary in both China and later Taiwan. In 1978 He invited Winnen to come to Christ's College in Tamsui, Taiwan and teach English, beginning in the fall of 1978. This school was founded by his grandfather, the late James R Graham. A few months later Winnen met a Northern Ireland Presbyterian missionary at the school who introduced him to the biblical gospel. Up to that time Winnen does not ever recall hearing the true gospel, having been raised on the Arminianism which obtains in the Southern Baptist denomination. Winnen hated the gospel of grace and fought it with every "Arminian verse" he could think of. After a few weeks his unbelief was overcome by the omnipotent power of the Holy Spirit and he believed the true gospel of grace for the first time. After 2 years Winnen returned to the US to attend seminary and received a masters of divinity degree. He was later ordained in a presbyterian church. He married Liching Hsu, a Taiwanese who was a student at the college Winnen's grandfather founded in Tamsui. Winnen and Liching have 7 sons who are all being taught to be bilingual, as Winnen still has a great love for the Chinese people.
