Introduction
Friendship Presbyterian Church is a local congregation of people from a variety of backgrounds, bound together by a common bond – we have been saved by the grace of God through faith in Jesus Christ. Begun in 1907 as a Bible class, the work developed into an established church and has continued in its aim to honor the Lord Jesus Christ to today.
We believe that all people are born with a sinful nature and that they rebel against God. Because of their sin, all men are worthy of God’s judgment and death. But God so loved the world that he sent Jesus Christ to save his people from their sin through his perfect life and his death on the cross in their place. Through repentance for sin and faith in Christ, men, women and children can be at peace with the Lord who made them and have an abundant life in service to him.
The word Presbyterian comes from the biblical Greek word presbuteros, which means elder. The Bible teaches that God raises up elders to shepherd the flock under the authority of the Lord, the Good Shepherd. We are also connected to over 30 other congregations in Western Carolina – and 1,500 nationwide – in the Presbyterian Church in America (PCA) that share a commitment to Christ and his Word. The PCA was formed in 1974 to carry the banner of biblical Christianity and historic Presbyterianism. You may log on to www.pcanet.org to find out more about the history and doctrine of the PCA.
The word Church reflects our relationship to the world. Jesus said, “I will build my church.” The word church in the Bible means “a people who are called out.” We believe that we are a people that have been called out of darkness and into God’s marvelous light to declare with joy his praises to a lost world.
We seek to honor God by following His Word in all that we do.
Our worship is according to Scripture. We call upon God in prayer, we sing praises to him, we confess our faith in him, and we hear from his Word. We pray for his Spirit to make it acceptable to him.
Our teaching is designed to ground Christians in God’s Word and encourage them in their walk with the Lord. We desire to see people grow in their personal relationship with Jesus Christ, living a life of repentance and faith in him, and having an impact on their families, friends, neighbors, co-workers, and the world around them. We honor the Bible as the inspired Word of God and our absolute authority and hold that man is justified before God only by grace through faith alone and not of works. We hold the Westminster Confession of Faith, along with the Larger and Shorter catechisms, as the detailed doctrinal standard of the church, subordinate to the Bible.
We are family-oriented. Our family ministry aims at aiding parents in their God-given task of rearing their children in the "nurture and admonition of the Lord" (Eph 6:4). We emphasize the family pew (children in church with their parents), the family altar (daily family worship at home) and catechizing. We believe that the surest way to lead children to Christ is through parents actively engaged in the discipling of their children (Deut 6:6,7). On Wednesday evenings children as well as adults request hymns and join in praying. During activities and play times, children of all ages enjoy being together.
We heartily welcome all of every age, race and station in life.
