Aim: To understand that discipleship means dying and living with Jesus, as His church.
Exegesis: Total commitment requires of us a new nature, which lines-up with Christ's will (v. 34a), death (v. 34b), and ways (v. 34c). Total commitment requires of us a new heart, one that invests itself in Christ (v. 35) and aligns itself with Christ (vv. 36-37). Total commitment requires of us a new mission. The church now proclaims God's Savior (v. 38a) and gospel (v. 38b).
Key verse: v. 34 ''When [Jesus] had called the people to Himself, with His disciples also, He said to them, 'Whoever desires to come after Me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow Me.'''
