The third commandment prohibits taking the Lord's name in vain. What does this mean? We are not to use God's name recklessly or disrespectfully. Nor are we to profess identification with His name while living contrary to it. Other examples of violating this commandment include praying in God's name but not believing in His power to hear and answer and generally abusing God's Word. How do we honor His name? We worship Him, speak of Him with proper awe, defend His name, and live in conformity with His total being. To do otherwise is to stand in jeopardy of divine retribution. Thank God for His grace! He is ready to pardon sin because of the finished work of Jesus Christ on the cross.
