Christian opinion has undergone a tremendous shift in how it views Islam. There has been concerted effort to remake the public image of the religion of Mohamed, not only in American culture but throughout Europe and Asia. This campaign has been so effective that some voices speak apologetically of the Crusades in which Christendom sought to push back the advance of Islam. To be sure, not everything about the armies of Christendom was righteous.
