Grace signals the reversal of this world's value system. Grace means the wealthy, righteous, wise, noble, and strong have no advantage when it comes to getting God's blessing and the free gift of salvation. In fact, it is often the pitiful and pathetic who have an advantage, because it is they who recognize how hopeless they are without God's unmerited kindness. Because tax collectors and prostitutes are entering God's kingdom ahead of the religious (Matthew 21:31), grace is scandalous!
If believers have in common that they are all unworthy people who have experienced God's radical generosity, then grace ought to be a defining quality of the Church!
