Why does Jesus give His life at the Cross? To cancel sin. To cancel the offence of sin and the guilt of sin. The work of Jesus on the Cross far exceeds the works of individual priests and in fact the whole priesthood and its practices down through the ages. His sacrifice makes real atonement for sinners. The sacrificial system was only a shadow of what would be necessary to bridge the gap between God and man. What Jesus does on the Cross is the reality. It DOES bring forgiveness, and it DOES take away sin. This gives us comfort and assurance to know that our sin has been dealt with already on account of Jesus.
