The costs involved in being a disciple of Jesus is revealed from the two principles He teaches us in our text. These two principles are often misunderstood and misapplied in the lives of Christ's followers. Misunderstanding and misapplication can be corrected when the disciple is willing to listen and learn. However, if these principles are truly absent from the life of the one who claims to be a disciple, that claim would have to be brought into question. In fact, it is these very principles that Jesus is teaching to the crowds to make sure they understand the demands of discipleship. Anyone unwilling to meet these demands cannot be a disciple of Christ. The consummation of discipleship is also emphasized in the future rewards given to faithful witnesses and servants of Christ, and to those who receive them.
