John the Baptist and Jesus both preached the same gospel and the same Messiah, but the character of their ministries was very different. Tragically, the vast majority of their hearers refused to receive their message, and so they adopted a cynical attitude towards the messengers! John they accused of having a demon, Jesus they wrote off as a winebibber and gluttonous eater of meat. In two thousand years nothing has changed. When professing Christians adopt a cynical, fault-finding attitude towards true ministers of the gospel, it often reveals more about the hearts of the hearers than the preaching of the minister. Such was the case in the days of John and Jesus, and so often it is the case today.
