Jesus' audience didn't misunderstand what He was saying and think He was talking about cannibalism when He talked about eating His flesh and drinking His blood. What Jesus was doing was challenging their ritualism and in doing so exposing their dead hearts--their religious activities were divorced from faith in the One God promised. Jesus said that they were no different from their fathers who ate the manna in the wilderness yet died without faith in the Messiah.
