With this lesson we begin a new book together: The Pleasantness of a Religious Life. The book is relatively short, being six sermons by Matthew Henry, but carries an impact far beyond its size. Henry's goal is four-fold: First, he lists twelve pleasures that Christians as such enjoy. Then he reviews what God has done to bring sinners joy. Then he confirms what he has said so far by appealing to the facts of Christian experience. Finally, he urges his readers directly, starting from where they are, to enter into the fulness of the spiritual life that he has been describing. In this first lesson we consider the excellent introduction by J. I. Packer.
