As our Lord went up into the mount, He laid out the characteristics of a true child of God. He calls them blessed because one who is "poor in spirit" has been taught by the Holy Spirit his need for Christ, for without Him his soul is lost forever. He has been taught how precious Christ is to his soul. One who "mourns" sees his wretched sins before God and mourns over them for committing such things as put His precious Lord upon the cross. He sees himself prone to sin and corruption. He mourns, but is comforted by the Comforter, who shows him his sins have been forgiven. "Weeping may endure for a night, but joy cometh in the morning." He is so dependent on Christ for his joy. He cries out, "Lord, restore the joy of my salvation!" This one who is "meek" walks "humbly before God," remembering how The Lord brought him "up out of Egypt." He "hungers and thirsts after righteousness", for he knows he has no goodness of his own. He is constantly dependent upon Christ for "to will and to do of His good pleasure." He is "merciful" because His Lord is merciful. He is "pure in heart" because The Holy Spirit washes and cleanses him in the blood of Christ. This one knows it must be God who keeps his heart. When this is done, he sees Christ in everything. Because Christ has made peace for him through His blood, he is a "peacemaker." Because he is clothed in the righteousness of Christ, he is "persecuted for righteousness sake. Our Lord further teaches his child how to pray to the Heavenly Father. He recognizes the triune God in His holiness and glory. He is kept dependent upon The Lord for everything he needs in his daily walk, whether spiritual or physical.
