The word “fight” and the word “faith” might not be two words that you would think go together. Or at least you might think that they shouldn't be put together, lest we promote any kind of so-called “holy war.” But in the passage that we're going to study together this morning, Paul says, “Fight the good fight of the faith.” And so we need to understand what this fight is all about. And as we'll see, it's not a fight that we wage against other people. It's a battle that goes on in our own hearts, as we fight against our own sinful nature. As we remember the context of this chapter, we can see how Paul is now sharply contrasting Timothy with the kinds of people he had in mind in the previous verses.
