Our society is increasingly awash with a syncretistic, mystic paganism. In v16, Paul makes a general declaration which contains a specific corrective to the mode of thinking that would elevate creatures to the nature, status or roles of the Firstborn over all, Christ Jesus.
Here the apostle states certain things concerning Christ as Creator (that all things stand created in, through, and for him.
He declares certain things concerning Christ's creation - that there are things both within and beyond the range of the human eye, but that all things made bear the same relation to the Lord Jesus, noting that the distinctions Paul introduces are broad, and not intended to provide a detailed ranking system for unseen creatures, specifically, angels).
He underlines certain things concerning the relationship between Christ and his creation. Without dismissing, despising or mocking angels, in the face of language and notions that ascribe Christ's status or roles to angelic beings, Paul makes plain that no angel stands as a rival to Christ.
Finally, he requires certain things of our thinking and doing in relation to Christ and his creation. Our society seems as prone to this speculative, substantially pagan spirituality as was ancient Colosse. It is attractive and persuasive, yet fraudulent and empty. If we are to reist this subtle poison, we must know accurately and reckon with the offices, works, and worship belonging to Christ alone, allowing him no rivals.
