There were a number of ways by which the religious leaders of Jesus' day dishonored God and drew forth reproach from the Lord Jesus, but one of the things that the Pharisees did that so angered Jesus, who was zealous for His Father's glory, is that they were very careful to observe some of the minor matters of the law, while omitting the things that were much more important. Jesus said they were 'like blind guides, who strain out a gnat, and swallow a camel.' What they did amounted to being very careful not to allow a pesky gnat to get into their cup of wine or water, not noticing what should be fairly obvious, THERE'S A CAMEL IN THE CUP! It is as true in the spiritual realm as it is in other areas of life, some things are more important than others. All Scriptural truth is important, as all Scripture is 'God-breathed.' But Jesus is making it clear in this passage, some truths are much more important than others. How about you? Do you major on the minors, while neglecting such things as justice, mercy and faith? Is there a camel in your cup?
