In Genesis 23 Sarah, Abraham's wife of over 60 years, dies. This event -- as we would expect in anyone's life -- is a crossroads for Abraham. As he mourns for his beloved, he also has to make some difficult and practical decisions.
Will he remain in Canaan, or return to the more familiar faces and family he left years ago in order to follow God? We see Abraham by faith chooses to invest in the land that God has promised to him and his descendants, investing a great sum of money in order purchase a burial plot for Sarah.
What an encouragement this faithful action would have been to Moses' audience, the people of Israel, who were on the verge of entering this very land centuries later! And what a blessing for us today as well, reminding us to invest in the sure promises of God.
