In view of the context that precedes this verse, we see that a great disturbance hit the church at Ephesus through the teaching of some who were denying the doctrine of the bodily resurrection of believers and thus undercutting the whole Christian confession of the reality of the resurrection. Such teaching was so destructive that Paul is telling Timothy that Christian believers must turn away from the wickedness of such apostasy as this. It is crucial for Christians to know the fundamental doctrines and always cling to them and never depart from them, aligning themselves with believers of like mind, rejecting and exposing error, and declaring the truth in our generation.
