Summary, Part 4 (final) Parents, notice from these examples of God’s dealings with His repentant children principles for the parental chastening of your children: first, God is as pleased over the repentance of His children as He was angry over their disobedience. The fruit of successful parental discipline should be joy. Second, God informs His children that chastening is never an end in itself, but that its goal is always repentance and reconciliation, restoration to divine favor. And third, God delights to inform His penitent children how pleased He is with their repentance. He makes His favor tangibly known to His chastened children.

Summary, Part 3 No good thing comes from rebellion; only pain. f) GOD REASONABLY INCREASES THE SEVERITY OF HIS CHASTENING AS LONG AS HIS CHILDREN REFUSE TO REPENT (LEVITICUS 26:11-18, 21, 23-24, 27-28). ISAIAH 63:10: it’s a terrible thing when God Himself makes war on you. DEUTERONOMY 21:18-21: under the Old Testament, rebellious older children were put to death. PROVERBS 15:10: a very plain statement on stubborn rebellion. Parents, if you would be like God in your chastening of your children, you must meet their stubborn disobedience with increasingly severe chastening. g) GOD EAGERLY DELIGHTS IN RESTORING HIS CHASTENED, PENITENT PEOPLE TO HIS FAVOR. Examples: JUDGES 10:16, LAMENTATIONS 3:32, HOSEA 14:4, JEREMIAH 31:18-20, 32:41-42, ZEPHANIAH 3:15-17, LUKE 15:21-24.

Great Sermon! Let them know that you would far rather bless, that chastening them is your ‘strange work’. c) GOD DEMONSTRATES MERCIFUL RESTRAINT WHEN CHASTENING HIS CHILDREN (PSALM 103:10). EZRA 9:13: God’s judgment is restrained. PSALM 106:45-46: God remembers His covenants. Parents, when you are tempted to abuse the rod, remember God’s mercy toward you. God has never given you what your sins deserve. Bend your child’s will, but don’t break it. d) GOD WISELY INFLICTS ONLY THE PAIN NECESSARY TO TURN HIS CHILDREN FROM THEIR SIN. ISAIAH 57:16-19: God’s chastening is not to destroy us, but rather to destroy our love for sin. His chastisement is not an end, but a means to healing. HEBREWS 12:11: Biblical discipline leads to appreciation. Parents, remember that in your chastening, a repentant heart and the peace that follows is your goal. In doubt, err on the side of leniency. e) GOD PATIENTLY PROLONGS HIS CHASTENING UNTIL HIS CHILDREN REPENT OF THEIR SIN. EZEKIEL 24:13-14: God’s mercy is in proportion to the severity of our sin. ISAIAH 1:5: chastening continues until genuine repentance is had. Parents, unless your love for your children is stronger than their will to disobey, you will not possess the patience necessary to prolong your chastening until it achieves its desired effect.

Summary, Part 1 Today, we continue with III: GOD PROVIDES PARENTS THE PATTERN FOR CHILD DISCIPLINE IN HIS WORD. B. GOD IS THE PARENTS’ MODEL FOR THE CORRECTIVE DISCIPLINE OF HIS CHILDREN. 2. THE DIVINE PRACTICE OF CORRECTIVE DISCIPLINE: GOD’S HEART REVEALED IN THE MANNER IN WHICH HE CHASTENS HIS CHILDREN. PSALM 103:8-10, 13-14: there should never be a disconnect between a parent’s heart and disciplining hand. a) GOD KINDLY PROMISES HIS CHILDREN BLESSING FOR OBEDIENCE AND MERCIFULLY THREATENS DISCIPLINE BEFORE HE CHASTENS THEM. God warned Cain to follow Abel’s example. DEUTERONOMY 28:15: God doesn’t surprise people with judgment. Parents, follow the Lord’s example by setting before your beloved children both the pleasures that come from obedience as well as the painful punishment that will result from disobedience. b) GOD WANTS US TO KNOW THAT HE TAKES NO DELIGHT IN THE PAINFUL CHASTENING OF HIS CHILDREN (LAMENTATIONS 3:33). DEUTERONOMY 5:29: God’s prescient response to Israel’s declaration that they would honor God’s Law at Sinai. ISAIAH 28:21: “His unusual task” = judgment. Parents, let your children know by your demeanor and by constantly reminding them that you take no delight in punishing them for their sin and disobedience.
