After man's expulsion from Eden he fulfilled God's creation mandate, he was fruitful and multiplied and filled the entire earth. With the spread of mankind, however, came the spread of sin and death. The earth was full of violence, and God regretted that He had made man so He vowed to destroy all the earth. Yet God had made a promise that He would send the Seed of the woman to set men free from the power of Satan, and if He destroyed every man from the face of the earth that promise would never come to fruition. Therefore we read that "Noah found grace in the eyes of the Lord." This study of the Divine Covenants continues as we see God preserve a godly seed through whom the Messiah would one day come. Noah and his family found safety from God's wrath when God made a gracious covenant with him.
