Leprosy is a sad picture of sin. It separates from the presence of the Holy God, and causes the sinner to be cast outside the camp in disgrace and judgment. Lepers were only healed by the power of God, and not by their own will or obedience. So too God cleanses us of our sin when we were helpless, by His divine will and for his glorious purposes.
It is instructive to consider the Scripture's comments upon the high priest in the case of leprosy, and remembering that our Lord Jesus is our great High Priest in all things.
The priest had to go to where the leper was found, outside the camp, to declare him clean. But our great High Priest is already outside the camp. Indeed, Christ readily consorted with sinners, for He came to call sinners to repentance. The very incarnation was the condescension of God to approach the place of sinners without the camp in the person of the Son.
The priest judged whether or not the leper was clean. Our High Priest pronounces His people clean on account of the sacrifice He made for us.
Nobody else's opinions mattered - only the priest could declare a leper clean. So too, we need not go to so-called "priests" or listen to the wisdom of men, for Christ has declared all who trust in Him to be clean!
Like the priest of old, our Lord Jesus presents His people and His sacrifice before the throne of Heaven. We come boldly before it on account of His blood and righteousness.
Most precious of all, the Old Testament made provision for those who were too poor to get the necessary offerings. Sinners are all too poor to obtain a precious sacrifice satisfactory for cleansing, but our Lord Jesus is God's Lamb, provided for us!
