Your best gifts do not matter without charity. This is the divinely ordained way. Charity rejoices in the truth, and finds no joy in iniquity or unrighteousness. It softens our hearts towards those in sin. Psalm 119:136 tells us that David's heart was broken because the people didn't keep the law. Christ's compassion was in contrast with the Pharisees' pride. The 'publicans and sinners' flocked to Christ, not to the Pharisees. Christ was known as a 'friend of sinners.' And so should we be. And charity must start at the house of God. We mustn't rejoice when brethren fall into sin, or go astray. Then this compassion will be extended to the lost. Spurgeon said, 'O hearers! Do not kill me by destroying your own souls!'
