Psalm 110:1 is a prophecy of and confirmation of the Lord Jesus' ascension into heaven after the completion of his mediatorial work. As Jesus pointed out in Matt. 22:41-46, the Messiah, descended from David, is also David's Lord. This verse in Psalm 110 also speaks of Messiah's completed work of redemption and is an affirmation of the coming defeat of all Messiah's (and our) enemies. These truths in Psa. 110:1, or an aspect of them, are often reverenced by the NT writers.
