James White debates Roman Catholic Apologist Gerry Matatics
This the first of two debates held in Denver, Colorado during the Papal visit in 1993. Does the New Testament allow for an office of Pope? Was there a Papacy in the Early Church? Was Peter the first Pope? Does Peter have a line of successors? Is the Pope truly the Head of the Church, the Vicar of Christ on Earth, and the leader of all Christians? These are crucial questions that must be answered. This is the set you need to give to anyone who is considering the Papacy as a biblical belief.
If Peter was The Rock, he was the only one! James, (1:15:01-1:26:50 second monologue) put to rest the idea that Matthew was written in anything else originally, but Greek. The focus always remains on Christ in the book of Matthew, not on Peter. If the Papacy isn't in Matthew 16, it is no where else in the Bible. Mr. Matatics, James White fellow debater, had to prove that the Romish interpretation of Matthew 16 allows only for the Papacy and nothing else. ¶ Even Protestant theologians who say the rock is in reference to Peter in Matthew 16:18, this does not make Peter a Pope. Even if one thinks Peter is "the Rock," he is the only rock and doesn't have any successors. Jesus has the key of David, and not anyone else. ¶ Another rebuttal of seven minutes by James White starts at, 1:34:55 Remember that John was the beloved disciple of Christ. The Apostle Paul, would also be more qualified to be a "Pope" ¶ Peter is The Rock, is --not-- clearly given in Scripture. The New Testament never plainly states that! ¶ 1:43:38 started a session where each man asked a question and got a response. I will say the times are what was given by SA's online MP3 player. Also there were obnoxious extraneous noises that came on, on occasion during at least James' responses, but while irritating they weren't long.

The Impetuous Peter--Example Petrine Primacy?! 35:55 min. into the debate Dr. White offers his rebuttal to Gerry Matatics. Into the debate at 41:00 he looks into the four points the Romish Church has to prove. ¶ 1. The Romish Church says that Peter was appointed to primacy by the Lord Jesus Himself. This primacy is of honor, jurisdiction, and rulership. ¶ 2.This primacy is given according to the Romish Church, by its dogmatic teachings, Mat. 16:18-19, John 21:15-17, According to the Romish Church Peter is the rock of Mat. 16. This is to apply to Peter successors as well. When Christ told Peter to feed his sheep, Rome said this made Peter the pastor of all Christians. ¶ 3. Peter was the Bishop of Rome. ¶ 4. His primacy is passed on to the Bishops of Rome. Supposedly this was the belief of the ancient Christian Church. Anyone who holds a different opinion is an anathema. James White goes on to look at these points. ¶ 1. Problem: was Jesus speaking to Peter as the Rock? ¶2. Problem Peter was made the lead apostle? ¶ 3. The words of Jesus actually established the office of a Pope? ¶4. The Christian church has always supported the Peter/Pope idea?! The Romish Church has to prove its points beyond question, to have them accepted! One thing that is agreed to by Christians and Romists, you can't be neutral about the Papacy!
