The immediate destiny of the wicked at death accents the importance of repentance today. 1. Some verses seem to indicate an unconscious existence for the wicked after death. 2. At death, the souls of the wicked immediately begin to experience the eternal fires of hell. 3. Even during life, the unbeliever has begun the process of death. 4. The immortality of the soul contradicts an unconsciousness after death. 5. In contrast, those united to Christ immediately begin the process of renewal to eternal life. 6. No doctrine gives comfort to the wicked; instead, all urge immediate repentance.
