This letter of 2 Thessalonians was written to encourage Christians who were being persecuted. They are suffering for their faith and they are persevering through that suffering - the evidence shows that they have been converted – God's pronouncement in their case is right – they are saved! Paul says their suffering is making them worthy of the kingdom of God. In your Bibles above the word worthy, you might write the word fit. Paul doesn't mean that by suffering they are earning their salvation, but God is using their suffering to purify them and make them fit for the kingdom of God.
Paul has encouraged them as they face suffering by explaining its purpose and now in v6 he continues to encourage them by assuring them that God will punish those who are persecuting you. When will this happen? When will God bring relief to His people by repaying those who persecute them? A = on the day of Christ's return! The sermon is entitled – Jesus is Coming Again! I would like us to spend the rest of our time considering this great day of Christ's Return by asking three questions. 1) What Will He Look Like? -from heaven, with mighty angels, in flaming fire 2) What Will He Do? a) Punish All Unbelievers We are given two descriptions of this punishment. First = Everlasting destruction – v9 The second description of the punishment is shut out of the presence of God. b) Give Relief to His People 3) What Will Be the Result? These verses list two results: a) Christ will be glorified in His saints. – v10 The second result is… b) Jesus will be marveled at by all who believe
