A SERMON DELIVERED ON THURSDAY EVENING, AUGUST 5TH, 1886, BY C. H. SPURGEON, AT THE METROPOLITAN TABERNACLE, NEWINGTON.
“But if ye will not do so, behold, ye have sinned against the Lord: and be sure your sin will find you out.” — Numbers 32:23.
THERE are many dear friends engaged in business who can only reach the Tabernacle in time for the middle of the service, and therefore they lose the reading of the Scriptures and the exposition, which make up a whole with the sermon. This is a great loss to them, but as it is not their fault we must not let them suffer for it, so far as we can remedy the evil. With this design let me explain to them that, according to the chapter which we have read and expounded, the Israelites had conquered the country possessed by Og, king of Bashan, and Sihon, king of the Amorites; and the tribes of Reuben and Gad, having great quantities of cattle, thought that so rich a pasture country would be eminently suitable for them and for their flocks. They were no bad judges, for the country was specially fitted for sheep-farming. They therefore asked of Moses that they might have that country to be theirs. But Moses objected. Did they mean to sit still and enjoy that country, and then leave the rest of the tribes to cross the Jordan, and to fight for their possessions?
Strong rebuke from the Holy Spirit I am astonished with the accuracy in which I was described by Spurgeon, over one hundred years ago. I am that idle Christian which he is speaking to, and I was ashamed of myself upon hearing this sermon. I try to make my life clean, and to be confident in the grace of my Savior, but I am so lazy regarding other people. I do not lift a finger, I have given up in prayer for the lost. Thank God He has rebuked me in my youth and not on the day of Judgment. I need to get out there and work hard for the kingdom NOT for salvation, but because to be idle and let other brothers and sisters do the work is sin in so many ways, clearly outlined by Spurgeon. Please listen to this sermon.

Powerful message This is a powerful must hear message. Charles Spurgeon's pulpit was aflame with a passion for soulwinning that is sadly absent from many churches today. God forgive me for my idleness and lack of zeal for the lost. This sermon should be read by every bible believing church in America. We don't need seeker sensitivity we need a stern rebuke akin to the one that Spurgeon gave his church. You will be blessed and likely convicted by listening to this sermon.

Powerfully Striking Sermon! I have been deeply convicted of my sins by hearing this sermon. The speaker's reading of Spurgeon has taken God's word and rebuked me to my very core. I have nothing to hide behind. God forgive me of this great sin of doing nothing. Thanks so much for this ministry and your commitment to serving God.
Charles Haddon Spurgeon (1834-92) was England's best-known preacher for most of the second half of the nineteenth century. In 1854, just four years after his conversion, Spurgeon, then only 20, became pastor of London's famed New Park Street Church (formerly pastored by the famous Baptist... | more..
