This week on License to Parent Trace Embry, Rich Roszel and their guest, Ruben Jimenez, discuss what parents can do to prepare for the transition process when a teen leaves a residential care facility and returns home. Ruben shares insights from his book, “The Road Home,” a guide for parents of kids who are coming home after spending time in a therapeutic treatment program. This discussion is full of helpful information for all parents and especially those who may have a child at Shepherd's Hill Academy or a similar treatment center.
After spending months or even years in at a residential center it is vital that parents are equipped with resources to support that treatment as teens return home. When teens leave the home environment and come to a treatment center, they almost always experience a dramatic shift in boundaries, schedule and expectations. These are put in place to support growth and change in the teen. Rather than digressing into old habits when the teen returns home, the teen and parents can continue progress if there is some continuity between the treatment center and home life. Jimenez discusses how to facilitate this continuity.
