So what are the gates of hell? In Hebrews 2:14-15 we learn that by His death Jesus destroyed the power of the devil, which is the fear of death. The fear of death is what the gates of hell are about.
This is a prophecy, not just that He will resurrect, but that we will resurrect also (cf. Romans 8:11 / 1 Corinthians 6:14 / 2 Corinthians 4:14).
Jesus was predicting that He will be building a community of followers who would come to be known as the church, and death will not overcome it. The fear of death did not prevail against the apostles and other martyrs and won’t prevail against the tribulation saints (Revelation 12:10-11).
Death cannot overpower the church. The gates of Hell shall not prevail. Why? Satan has the gates, but Jesus has the keys (Revelation 1:17-18).
Using the keys, the power of the gospel, this is how we storm the gates!
We have the ultimate weapon, the gospel; we cannot ultimately be defeated, ultimately we will be resurrected.
