The Passover is the most important of the annual feasts (23:5). It celebrates the rescue of the Israelites from slavery in Egypt, when God caused the angel of death to ‚Äėpass over' the homes of the Hebrews and spare the lives of their first-born sons. Passover falls on the fourteenth day of the month of Abib ‚ÄĒ later called Nisan. It marks the birth of the nation of Israel and the Jewish New Year. Once Jerusalem and the temple are established, the Passover becomes an occasion of pilgrimage; but it is always a festival to be celebrated at home and in a family group.
