A literal interpretation of the Old Testament, in particular, unfulfilled prophecy, leads the reader to have a futuristic view of the Kingdom. The nation of Israel, referred to as the people of God, have promises made to them by God that are yet unfulfilled. The very character of God testifies to the certainty that these will yet be fulfilled as God has spoken.
The practice of using a non-literal approach to prophecy often spills over to other parts of Scripture as evidenced by spiritualized views of hell, creation, and Christ's substitutionary atonement. There is great and grave danger to the whole concept of God Himself, the Gospel message, and for the believer's behavior and sanctification.
Allegory opens the door to error as the word of God becomes subject to man's reasoning and interpretation.
