Many people are familiar with a sense of lostness. The Philippian jailer found that when he was afraid his prisoners had escaped. More than that, he found himself in the presence of a supernatural power that he could not control. Such an experience opens the springs of our heart allowing thoughts of God (long suppressed) to surface. Paul's party brought him a message of grace and hope. The gospel addresses our fear of God since it is a message from God, and our sense of wrongdoing since it speaks of atonement and forgiveness. It promises wholeness and security, all through Christ Jesus. So what should our response be? Paul told the jailer to "believe on the Lord Jesus Christ". The gospel calls us to respond to a living person who promises salvation to all who come to him for it. WE should believe that what the gospel says is true, and that Christ and his benefits are offered to us personally. He is calling us to entrust ourselves to him. That is personal dealing with the unseen saviour. It is comprehensive, for it deals with the totality of life. Christ responds by doing for us what he has promised - "you shall be saved".
