Christ was taking our place. That became obvious when he and his disciple were put on trial simultaneously, one before the High Priest, the other by public opinion. Satan was attacking as he had attacked Adam, but a second Adam was representing failed humanity. Peter ignored the word of God that came through Jesus and refused to pray. Jesus kept his Father's word and overcame temptation by his prayer in Gethsemane. The questioning of Peter expected a denial that he was a disciple, and it was easy for him to agree. Jesus' questions were intended to incriminate. By small steps Peter fell into the trap. By a lifetime of acts of obedience Jesus was prepared to overcome. Peter wanted to avoid suffering. Jesus was willing to suffer to save the people he loved. Peter dissociated himself from the Lord of glory. Jesus associated with sinful men to the point of bearing their sin on the cross. For Peter the outcome was bitter tears. For Jesus it was a task accomplished. As we look at this we see a picture of the gospel. The failing people of God are redeemed by One who is stronger. Our salvation lies in his grace and mercy. But we should still heed his word and betake ourselves to prayer.
