The Jewish leaders taunted the Savior as He hung upon the cross: "Let [God] deliver him now, if He will have him!"
The word for "deliver" means to rescue. There is another Greek word that also is translated "deliver," but it means to hand over, to surrender up, or even to betray.
First, note well that though Christ was not delivered from death, yet His body was delivered at that very moment: His body the Church whom He loves! God delighted in His Son's sacrfice, and therefore He delivered Him up to death for our offenses. If He had not delighted in Him, He would not have made Him an offering for sin - for only a sacrifice that was a sweet savor to God would atone for our sins!
