Last week we looked at how Jesus’ birth resembles the birth of Abraham’s son, Isaac, and fulfills God’s promise to Abraham. This week we will see how Jesus’ birth fulfills the Lord’s promise to David. This passage is also appropriate as we look ahead to a new year in which we may have great hopes and expectations. David had a great plan to build a house for the Lord. The Lord, however had a different plan which was to build a great house for David. While it is good to plan (Prov. 21:5) we must submit our hopes and dreams to the Lord Whose plan is always the best plan (Js. 4:13-17, Rom. 8:28, Prov. 16:9).
