Submission v7 He was brutally treated as He humbled Himself. The Servant submits Himself to unjust punishment, not opening His mouth (cf. ch40 – Israel is justly punished and complain). If He opened His mouth and defended Himself, we'd go to Hell. He knew what would happen, yet He set His face as a flint. He is shorn, naked on the cross, shamed.
Deprivation v8 of Justice – He was innocent yet had no fair trial of a full life – A full life was thought of a blessing of offspring – Having no children is seen as a curse
Humiliation v9 Deprived of a proper burial – Far be it from God to put the righteous to death with the wicked (Gen 18:25). Yet Christ was.
MANY MADE RIGHTEOUS
Propitiation v10 God is naturally angry against sin. God's wrath on sin must be satisfied. Here Christ is viewed as the guilty offender and absorbs the wrath of God. (cf. Phinehas in Num 25) Piper – God puts His son to grief to reconcile His love for his glory and His love for sinners
Justification v11 God saves sinners by grace alone by Christ alone. Rom 3:23 – It was to show His righteousness, that He might be the just and justifier. He dies in place of sinners and we are fully justified. By His knowledge (ie. His experience on the cross and acquaintance with grief) many are made righteous.
Vindication v12 He was unjustly condemned, numbered among transgressors. Yet He will be high and lifted up (52:13) Christ here is vindicated, honoured, exalted. He is rewarded by His Father for His obedience and given the name above every name (Phil 2). He is rewarded with MANY offspring, who will honour the Father.
