The Gospels do not give us the complete story of the birth of Christ. For that we must have the curtain pulled back and look at the two great conspiracies that determine human history, one benevolent, the other hateful.
This sermon takes us behind the scenes as to why things unfold as they do. Beginning with the birth narrative recorded in Matthew 1:18-2:3, we then went to Deuteronomy 22 and considered how the Law had the potential to kill the Messiah in his mother's womb, then we looked at the megalomaniacal and paranoid Herod the Great, who had some of his own sons killed because he feared they wanted to take his place. This led the Roman emperor Octavian, Caesar Augustus, reflecting on Herod's Jewish dietary habits, to make a pun in Greek: "Better to be Herod's pig (huos, ὑός) than Herod's son (huios, υἱός)." But then we saw the curtain pulled back and discovered who was manipulating all these events, the great red dragon of the Apocalypse, Satan himself in Revelation 12.
