There are clearly two parts to the Book of Joshua. There is the conquest of Canaan and the distribution of the land. In this study we really took an overview of the distribution of the land.
A recurring them has been that Joshua is the first installment of the Great Prophet of Deuteronomy 18 and he does almost everything well. This of course prefigures the Christ who would come and place all his (and ours) under His feet.
Before preaching this message, we actually looked at parts of several chapters. In addition to those listed, we also read Joshua 13:1-14 and Joshua 19:49-51. These all contributed to demonstrate the Lord's fulfillment of His Promises.
It is clear that special focus is placed on Judah (the lineage of Christ) and offspring of Joseph. I hadn't seen before that Joseph received a double portion through Jacob adopting his two sons Ephraim and Manasseh. Amazingly God preserved Joseph's sons throughout the years and even made tribes of them.
Theme: The LORD fulfills His promise to Abraham, Isaac and Jacob by allotting to the Children of Israel the Promised land.
