This class is a survey of the issues and challenges faced by international missionaries. Prof. Herfst worked among the Achi people of Guatemala from 1992 until 2002. During that time he planted six churches, supervised the OT translation project and provided biblical training for leaders. From 2002 until 2004 he served as pastor for a church planting work on Vancouver Island in Canada. In 2004 he accepted a call from Seminario Evangélico Presbiteriano of Guatemala in San Felipe. Retalhuleu to head their missions department. He also teaches Hebrew and OT exegesis. He is visiting professor at Seminario José Carrera in Guatemala City as well as Seminario Evangélico Teológico de Occidente in Quetzaltenango. Pastor Herfst is part of the teaching staff at Iglesia Presbiteriana "Bethel" in Quetzaltenango where he particularly works with young adults. He is member of Reconciliation Commission of the Iglesia Evangélica Presbiteriana Nacional de Guatemala and regularly gives conferences both in Guatemala and abroad. He is founding member of the Guatemalan chapter of "La Red del Camino para la Misión Integral en América Latina" and member of the Mission Committee of the ICRC. In addition to his teaching ministry, Pastor Herfst is president of Asociación para el Desarrollo Integral SAQ B'E, a Christian relief organization working in the Western part of Guatemala.
