In developing the superiority of Christ and Christianity over Judaism, Paul reveals a new truth supported in the OT, but largely not understood. Jesus will replace the Levitical system, but He is not to be a high priest in the Aaronic line, but after the order of Melchizedek (Psa. 110:4).
The Seventh chapter of Hebrews addresses this fact, showing that this mysterious priest-king, Melchizedek, was greater than the patriarch Abraham. This was evidenced in two things: Abraham paid tithes to him as a way to recognize his superiority. In this act, Levi, not yet born, paid tithes, showing that Melchizedek was even greater than Levi. Second, Melchizedek blessed Abraham as a priest of the Most High God.
The conclusion of the argument is that the greater, Jesus Christ, priest-king after Melchizedek, replaces the Levitical system that prefigured and foreshadowed Jesus.
